In you are attending Urban Iditarod this Saturday, we are forced to charge $5 - $10 sliding scale per person fee. Park Service hit us with a $1000 cleanup bond for a permit. And the shear number of attendees (1000+) means we have to rent 3 carts this year. In order for Urban Iditarod to continue we must show the SFPD and Park Service that we are organized and can be trusted to maintain this event as it continues to grow. That means more expenses and more help. It breaks my heart to do this, but the alternative is the end of a great event.
Sorry for the late notice, the email came late last night from Park Service so we had no time to mention it in any previous announcements.
Feel free to pull a, “Nah I used to go to Urban Iditarod when it was free. Back then it was cool, and you could still carry guns, and start fires and there weren’t all these BLM rangers.” and you're welcome to stay home if you don't like it.
Mushingly yours,

Yes I know it says it's a free event, Alpha Dog is busy building a robot army and hasn't had time to update the site

Re: Urban Iditarod [UPDATE]
Fri, March 3, 2006 - 10:01 AMI think it's time for a critical mass style event. No organizer, noboy in charge, smaller groups heading out in different directions. Eventually winding up at the same place.
I didn't go lat year, but the reports of how the police treated everyone was enough to make me not want to go tomorrow. I'm happy it lasted at least 10 years, and I was happy to say that the 10 year anniversary was also the best evar for me.
I'll mark this one down as an end of an era. -
